What to Do if a Pipe Bursts in Your Home
If a pipe bursts, stop the water at the main shutoff if you can do so safely, avoid electrical hazards, and request a plumber for the source. Water extraction and drying may require a separate restoration provider.
1. Shut off the water if the route is safe
Use the nearest reliable shutoff or the home’s main water valve. Do not enter standing water near energized equipment, a damaged ceiling, or another visibly unsafe area just to reach a valve.
2. Reduce immediate hazards
Keep people and pets away from wet electrical devices and weakened materials. Call emergency services when there is an immediate electrical, fire, gas, or structural danger.
3. Separate plumbing repair from water cleanup
A plumbing professional addresses the broken pipe or fitting. A water-damage restoration provider may be needed to extract water, dry materials, and address affected contents. One company does not automatically replace the other.
4. Record useful details
Photograph visible conditions when safe, note when the water was found, and list affected rooms. Keep receipts and communication for your records; insurance coverage decisions belong to your insurer.
